Cholesterol Medications

High cholesterol is a common problem, and a serious cause of heart attacks and strokes. Attempts to treat this with diet, exercise, and weight loss should always be considered, but unfortunately this is often not successful. Therefore doctors often prescribe  medications to help lower cholesterol. Statins are the group of drugs most frequently prescribed for this problem. Statins are much more effective than any other cholesterol medications  available. All the statins are very effective in lowering cholesterol, and we have very good evidence that they decrease the risk of a heart attack, stroke or death in people with high cholesterol, or even those who do not have high cholesterol but are at high risk for these problems.

All medications carry some risk and many people are understandably concerned about the risk of a complication or side effect from the statins. However, for the majority of people, the risk of a benefit from these medicines outweighs the risk of a serious complication by about a hundred to one. Therefore, while it is always appropriate to discuss your concerns with your health care provider, keep in mind that for most people the best way to reduce your risk of heart complications from cholesterol problems is by using a statin as prescribed.

If you have been advised to take a statin (Lovastatin, Zocor, Pravachol, Lipitor, or Crestor), talk with your doctor before stopping this medicine. It could save your life!
