Benefits of Aspirin

The American Heart Association recommends aspirin use for those who have had a heart attack, heart disease or stroke.   Using aspirin on a daily basis has been shown to decrease risk of heart attacks or strokes by helping prevent clot formation.

Anti-inflammatory Medications

  1. This includes: Celebrex, Voltaren, Naprosyn, Aleve, Motrin, Advil (ibuprofen) – also called NSAIDS.
  2. These medications help relieve pain, reduce inflammation, or lower fever, but only aspirin is recommended to prevent heart attack and stroke.
  3. Some NSAIDS are associated with increased risk for heart disease.
  4. After a heart attack, patients may be at higher risk of death if they are treated with high doses of certain NSAIDS.
  5. If a patient is going to use these medications, instructions on label should be followed and if the medication is needed for longer than 10 days, a physician should be consulted.
  6. No known cardiovascular benefits
  7. If you are taking Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and aspirin, take aspirin at least 1 hour before the ibuprofen.
