Benefits of Aspirin
The American Heart Association recommends aspirin use for those who have had a heart attack, heart disease or stroke. Using aspirin on a daily basis has been shown to decrease risk of heart attacks or strokes by helping prevent clot formation.
Anti-inflammatory Medications
- This includes: Celebrex, Voltaren, Naprosyn, Aleve, Motrin, Advil (ibuprofen) – also called NSAIDS.
- These medications help relieve pain, reduce inflammation, or lower fever, but only aspirin is recommended to prevent heart attack and stroke.
- Some NSAIDS are associated with increased risk for heart disease.
- After a heart attack, patients may be at higher risk of death if they are treated with high doses of certain NSAIDS.
- If a patient is going to use these medications, instructions on label should be followed and if the medication is needed for longer than 10 days, a physician should be consulted.
- No known cardiovascular benefits
- If you are taking Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and aspirin, take aspirin at least 1 hour before the ibuprofen.
